Sex pill/ sedative Ambien is once again in the news. It first came to public attention regarding one of it’s bizarre side effects - women who took Ambien would engage in ’sexual behavior’ while sleeping. Husbands would refer to them as “Ambien dates”. Even Lindsay Lohan was rumoured to have had Ambien smuggled into her during one of her many rehab stints, leaving a fascinated public imagining ‘drugged out Lindsay Lohan zombie sex‘. Well now Ambien is in the news again, in connection with sex. It’s also in connection with two other American pass times: greed & murder.
The story took place in that playground of the rich and famous, Palm Beach Florida. It involves the late hedge fund manager Seth Tobias. Police in Palm Beach received a call from Mrs Tobias, claiming her husband had drowned. When they arrived, they found Mr Tobias floating face down in his swimming pool. Seemed straight forward, but questions began surfacing almost immediately.
For one thing Tobais aide, Bill Ash, was quite vocal about his suspicions. He said, to anyone who’d care to listen, that he thought Tobias had been murdered. What’s more, he felt that the widow, Filomena Tobias was responsible. Those are pretty heavy accusations, but Ash was ready to back them up.

Ash’s lawyer, Debra Opri, called in polygraph expert Joseph Paolella. Paolella is an ex-Kennedy Detail Secret Service Agent. He also blew the lid off of the Judi Barr case - in which she used a friend to solicit a murder. Ash was subjected to a battery of obvious questions. He passed with flying colours.
Some of the things the test seems to establish is that “Filomena admitted to Ash that she served Seth a spicy sauce in order to disguise the taste of Ambien pills“, “Filomena coaxed Seth into their pool by telling him, “If you eat [all the pasta], I’ll call [a male stripper known as] Tiger to come over for some kinky sex“, and that “After finding him floating on his back, she turned him over and left. She called 911 only after she was convinced he was dead“.
Naturally Filomena’s lawyer, Gary Dunkel, denies the whole thing. The idea that his client lured her husband to his death with a pasta dinner and the promise of kinky sex is preposterous to him. Says Dunkel, “We deny everything Bill Ash says. We’ve tried to take his deposition three times under oath [in the probate proceeding over Seth’s estate]. He failed to show up.” Ash maintains that he’s waiting for the results of toxicology reports.
So while the probate case involving the late investment banker’s assets is up in the air for the moment, the evidence seems to be stacking up against the widow. More over, residents of Palm Beach don’t seem surprised by the course the case is taking. it seems that Filomena isn’t well liked. In fact one resident posted the following on NYDailyNews message board “I’m from Florida and know Filomena. It won’t be any surprise to most in Palm Beach and Jupiter when this turns into a murder case. The details in the case are crazy. I think it’ll make a good LIFETIME movie or tell all book. Well at least some one can see good coming out of this!
